Questions & Answers for Roxul Roxul Comfortbatt R14 For 2x4 Studs 16 In. On Centre

Question
At 122lbs per package, should I be concerned about my attic falling down due to weight?
My attic has existing R30 fiberglass batts and I was planning to add R22 roxul. I just noticed Roxul is significantly heavier than fiberglass. Should I be concerned?
Thanks!

I'm not sure where that 122 lbs came from. Each pkg is only about 42 pounds. I have an older home(90 yrs) with only 2 x 4s for suport. I insulated my attic to R50 2 yrs ago & have had no problems. The ceilings are latthe & plaster & nothing has happened thus far. I wouldn't worry about the weight at all. This product is excellent

Hi Gera,
You wouldn't have to worry about the weight, the installation is something that you will need to pay more attention to. The Roxul batts need to be right next to the roof trusses to keep the R value, it is suggested to first remove/move aside the R30 fiberglass and then in its place put the Roxul batts, then lay the fiberglass back over top. I hope this helps.

I've had the Comfortbatt & Safe N Sound both uncovered in my home for extended periods with no issues. I would presume it is very safe as the product states it is - "Children and Schools GreenGuard Indoor Air Quality Certified"

The only affect that may occur with the insulation exposed is itchy skin of an itchy throat as the fiberglass is exposed. I hope this helps.

A vapor barrier or retarder is vital component of exterior walls. It controls vapor transmission and helps prevent condensation from forming inside the walls and ceilings of your home. Vapor barriers/retarders are particularly important in Canada, and in US states that experience winter temperatures below freezing.

Warm air inside your home has a higher pressure than the cold air outside. It also contains moisture. To equalize the difference in pressure, the warm air tries to escape through your walls. The vapor barrier or retarder is what prevents that from happening. Without it, the escaping warm, humid air would pass through the insulation and contact the cold outer wall surface, where it would condense and collect. The resulting build-up of water inside the walls has the potential to damage wall framing members and promote the development of mold.

This product is amazing. I've had my home inspected through the eco-energy rebate program & had no issues. The product is wonderful in everyway. I would never recommend using pink fiberglass insulation. I've insulated my attic(R50) bathroom & basement using comfortbatt, I also used safe N Sound in the divinding walls & ceiling in my basement. It is so easy to use & I've never had to worry about glass fibers floating around in the air. It is so easy to cut & work with.

Great question. The answer to this questions is that Roxul does not use CSA to certify thier products as ULC is more recognized in building materials products:

• The ULC Mark is issued by Underwriters
Laboratories of Canada.
• This mark is nationally recognized in
Canada for many types of products,
including building materials and fire
protection and suppression products.
• It indicates compliance with Canadian
standards, many of which have been
developed by ULC. Consumers and
regulators.

So, just to summarize, this product is perfectly fine to use in your home. Hope this helps.

Question
Vapour/Moisture Barrier?
Hi, I have a basement that is partially renovated. There are already wooden studs in place but nothing underneath. Can I place the vapour barrier over the insulation? Or do I need to slide it in behind the studs somehow?

The correct place for the vapour barrier is over the insulation ( the warm side of the insulation) not between the foundation and the studs (the cold side of the insulation.).
