As per the manufacturer this product should be fine to use with your hermit crab but if you are worried then you can heat up your oven an heat dry the sand and this will make it even safer for your hermit crab. I hope this helps.

Question
Is this silica or is it "normal" beach sand
The info posted above showed that it was silica, which is a known carcinogen. Silica wouldn't be the kind of sand you find at the lake...

Please help!

Silica is a quartz. The major constituant in sand from most parts of the the world is silca. This sand would be the same stuff you walk and play in at the beach if you live in Norh America EXCEPT that it is washed. If it has been properly washed the silica dust which can be harmful to lungs has been removed leaving only larger grains of sand which will not be inhaled and are not harmful if touched.

answer 2
The most common constituent of sand, in inland continental settings and non-tropical coastal settings, is silica (silicon dioxide, or SiO2), usually in the form of quartz, which, because of its chemical inertness and considerable hardness, is the most common mineral resistant to weathering.

So yes, it would be the kind of sand you find at the lake.

YES you can! This is a natural sand from the lake and is inert so it will not affect your water quality. My fish and live plants love it. It will also help you control the Nitrate levels in the tank as the fish will find and eat more food so there is less remaining to spoil. You will need to wash/rinse completely to remove the fine dust before using. I also bake the sand in a shallow aluminum pan ($2.00 at dollar stores) , with the sand just barely covered with water, at 350 degrees for 45 minutes to kill any bacteria or parasites and eggs, simply to protect my fish from possible disease and worms, etc. The sand also reflects light so the tank will look more alive and real. TRY IT....YOU WILL LIKE IT..... AND SO WILL THE FISH.

Assuming it is about 3 feet by 3 feet... Using an automated aquarium calculator:

741 pounds of substrate is required to produce a depth of 6 inches in a 36 x 36 tank

So about 16 bags.
