Someone told me I had to be a certified gas fitter in order to purchase a gas hot water tank, it this true?

Yes infact you have to be licensed to install because a PERMIT must be filled out and submitted to the authority having jurisdiction. A home owner is not able to fill out or submit a permit for a natural gas installation. Every NEW install of a gas burning appliance must have a permit filled out.

Actually, you don't have to be a certified gas fitter to install one either. You just have to have the gas company inspect and pass your work before using the appliance.

No, you do not have to be a certified gas fitter to purchase a natural gas water heater but you must be a certified gas fitter to install one. I hope this helps.
