You were given incorrect information. The Q series are outfitted to handle disposable propane cylinders, either the bernzomatic type or the more common coleman type.
However, you can use an adapter hose so that the bbq will work with either 5, 10, or 20lb qcc1 tanks. 2 options for you:
1. special order the genuine weber hose at a store nearby, item number is 6501, retail is around 40 bucks.
2. Home Depot stocks the same hose in the GrillPro brand, item number 80004. Should retail for under 20 bucks.
Neither option will void your warranty.

Do want a cooking grid, like the one that came with the unit? if so, you can purchase that part at the home depot as a special order. The part # is 41658.

If you're looking for an actual griddle (for bacon and eggs etc...) you can also purchase that part at the Home Depot as a special order. The part for the griddle is 6504.

if you have any other questions or need more info, call 1.800.265.2150 to speak with Weber customer service.

yes, the burner controls are in the regulator. it's also not designed to attach to anything other than a 1lb disposable cylinder, or a 20lb/ 10lb or 5lb QCC1 tank, with the appropriate hose adapter.

yes you need a 4' adapter hose. there is a weber version, 6501, or the grillpro version, carried in all stores, 80004. They're essentially the same item, but the grillpro is quite a bit lower in cost.

No this bbq is designed to function with either the valve included, and a disposable 1lb cylinder, or you can use a 4' adapter hose (either a grillpro or weber brand) and a 20lb propane tank.

hooking this bbq up to a fuel source by any other way is not safe, and will void your warranty.
