If the hardwood floor has been installed over a wooden subfloor it is not necessary to remove it and you would not need to purchase anything else. If the subfloor is concrete, the hardwood floors must be removed and you must also use Pergo Moisturebloc™ or SoftSeal™.

Question
Water Damage
How does the product stand up to water damage? I'm interested in refinishing my front enterance and my snowy shoes/boots would end up melting on the floor. I've heard that water can sometimes warp and swell flooring like this and was wondering if that were true? I also have a cat that loves to scratch on the floor, so another question of mine would be how scratch resistant is the flooring?

PERGO installation instructions indicate that expansion spaces should be filled with 100 percent mildew resistant sealant (or PERGO Sealant) in areas where the core material might come in contact with water. Any spills on the floor must be picked up within 30 minutes to avoid water/liquids getting through the seams. One of the advantages of PERGO is that a damaged plank can be replaced. Should the sub floor become wet, it may be possible to replace a portion of your PERGO floor. These are both jobs for professionals who have the experience and tools need to accomplish these tasks.

Pergo has the highest wear resistance ratings of any brand of laminate floor. Pergo is scratch resistant, but like other hard-surface floors, it is not scratch-proof. To protect your Pergo floor from surface scratches, place walk-off area rugs or mats inside any exterior doorway to collect small bits of gravel that may track in on shoes. Keep your pet's nails trimmed. It’s been our experience (in more than 25 years of product use) that the appearance of scratches dissipates over time. The "sharp" edge of the scratch becomes more rounded, and less likely to reflect light. It’s not possible to remove scratches, but it is possible to replace the planks.

Question
Can I still use a quiet core layer under the wood?
My condo has strict requirements for a quiet core layer under the laminate. Can I still add this despite the already present underlayment? If not, is it possible to get this wood without the underlayment attached?

Elite Bordeaux Butternut is not manufactured without the pre-attached underlayment.
If you have purchased a product with the pre-attached foam underlayment additional foam underlayment is not necessary. Adding extra sound barrier underlayment might create excess cushioning and potentially cause the floor to separate.

Below are the ratings for the pre-attached sound barrier on the laminate floor:

The sound rating, (Sound Transmission Class, STC) is 52.
The impact rating (Impact Insulation Class, IIC) is 59.

Install in a basement
Can this product be installed in a basement that is dry?

Can it be installed right on the cement floor?

Pergo flooring can be installed in a basement that i s dry. The subfloor must be leveled within 3/16 of an inch within a 10 foot radius. The subfloor should not slope no more than 6 inches. Also the subfloor should be clean, dry and flat. The surface of the sub floor must be flat. Fill excessive voids or low areas using a Portland cement and latex based leveling compound. Allow the leveling compound to dry thoroughly before beginning the PERGO flooring installation. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to be sure it is appropriate for the application. When using a leveling compound, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, and allow the compound to dry completely before starting to install the PERGO Flooring. High areas can be sanded, ground down or floated over with an approved self leveling compound. The sub floor must not slope more than 1 inch in 6 feet.

We also recommmend to perform a moisture reading test. The maximum reading should not exceed 4.5%. First install a 6 mil .vapor barrier over the cement floor. You want to overlap the seams by eight inches or tape them together with duct tape.

can i put this in an unheated cabin over the winter

Yes.Unheated cabin/vacation home – Must meet requirements for installation in a home with climate control. The fact that it is unheated during the colder seasons will not damage the laminate flooring.

Pergo® is designed for interior use only, and is suitable for use in cottages, sun rooms and other locations that are not heated year round. A minimum temperature of 65 degrees F must be maintained for at least 2 days prior to delivery of the flooring. The planks must acclimate in the room they will be installed in for at least 2 days prior to installation so they can adjust to local temperature and humidity conditions. The temperature needs to remain at a minimum temperature of 65 degrees for at least 2 days after installation
