They're different depths - they gradually get smaller from bottom to top.

I also have wood floors and haven't had any issue with the shelf sliding off of the wall. I thinks its just the design on how it leans that prevents it from sliding. You can also purchase little rubber stick ons, to put on the bottom of legs that would help if you are having issues.

I just measured it, its 6.5" from the floor to the first shelf.
