Usually ceilings are not insulated but if you do have insulation between your main floor and the basement for sound proofing purposes then no these lights cannot be used. Hope this helps.

Question
How do these stay up in the ceiling on top of the drywall?
The pack I bought doesn't have the same black wire style brackets shown in the picture, and instead has these C shaped thick black metal brackets, which I can't seem to attach to the housing, and if they could be attached, they don't look like they would fit through the drywall hole.

Question
Drop down ceiling
What would you suggest when it comes to installing these lights. Should I attachthem to the joists or should I clip them onto my drop down ceiling? If I clip them to the drop down, should I add more support to the ceiling? Thanks - Joel

It took me a trip to the store to figure it out, but it's actually quite simple. It's a simple process, but I'll explain it step by step in gruesome detail.

i.) This is the trick. Separate the nickel-coloured trim from the white-metal base. It might be a bit tight the first time you do this. Note that you are removing EVERYTHING that is nickel coloured, not just the outer ring. Both the outer ring AND the inner ring that pivots are a single piece. This nickel portion fits snugly into the white metal portion.

ii.) Pull the nickel trim and attached light bulb down.

iii.) Locate the white ceramic ballast white has two wires going into it. Grasp the ballast with one hand, and use your other hand to grasp the bulb, push in slightly (a couple of mm), and then twist 30 degrees counter clockwise. The bulb and trim will pull off the fixture entirely.

iv.) Pull the bulb out of the trim. It is held in by a horseshoe-shaped piece of metal, but it's pretty easy to get out with some wiggling.

v.) Attach a new 50W 120V GU10 bulb to the nickel trim using the the horseshoe clip.

vi.) Plug the bulb into the ballast by pressing in and turning clockwise 30 degrees.

vii.) Push the nickel trim firmly into the white metal base, and you're done!

Question
3 of 6 lights dropped out of the canister
Even though all 6 canisters were installed properly using the hardware in the box (metal spring clips) 3 of the 6 wiggle sufficiently upwardly that the light rings don't anchor properly and slip downward. Any ideas on how I can overcome this problem?

There is no way to solve this problem. I've used these twice - about 5 years apart. Home Depot changed the clips over a 5-year period but the new clips are no better than the original ones. The problem with these fixtures is that there are only two remodel clips and not three. See my review submitted May 22, 2011 for more details.

The clips are useless. These pot lights are very poorly designed. See my review submitted on May 22, 2011. I do not recommend using them at all.
