Question
Why do we have to hold the handle down to get it to flush?
Everything else is great with the toilet, except for this one problem. If the handle isn't held down until the flush is complete, it will stop mid-way. We didn't install it, but my husband looked into the tank and noticed an elastic band holding the flapper thing closed. We're afraid that if we remove the elastic it won't seal properly.

part of the instructions while installing the toilet- remove rubber band! This toilet should flush fast and hard with a quick press of the handle.

You must remove the elastic band. It is a necessary step that the instructions omit.

A 10" rough-in toilet may suite your needs better. The American Standard Cadet 3 and Colony FitRight can be special ordered through your local Home Depot store in a 10" rough.

answer 2
The Mainstream toilet is designed for a 12" rough-in. American Standard does manufacture 10" rough toilets that may better suit this application. They are available in the Cadet 3 and Colony FitRight product lines. These can be special ordered through your local Home Depot store.

Question
Meaning of rough in size
What does a 12 inch rough in size mean exactly? Does it mean the floor will be covered over a 12 inch circle centred on the drain hole or does it mean the centre of the drain hole needs to be at least 12 inches from the wall or what?

This is the distance from the center of the drain (or the two "closet" bolts) to the finished wall. My toilet is about 12.5 inches from the wall and looks fine (there is actually just over an inch from the back of the tank to the wall, it looks fine though.)

answer 2
When a toilet manufacturer speaks to the "rough-in" for a toilet, they are speaking to the distance from the centre of the toilet flange (the part of the drain that the toilet attaches to) to the wall. Most common is a distance of 12", but 10" and 14" can be seen also.

Question
tank filling time
I purchased the Mainstream toilet last year and lately it's taking around 30 minutes for the tank to fill up after flushing. Is this a problem with the valve?
Thanks.

30 minutes is extremly long. It is strange.
1. Is water supply SHUTOFF VALVE fully open?
Open the water tank cover and check what is going on.
2. Do you hear the water filling the tank with strength?
If yes, then, probably your flush valve is leaking - you have to replace it.

There may be a blockage in the refill valve, reducing water flow. You may want to contact American Standard at 1-800-387-0369, and they can provide troubleshooting advice or warranty help.

Question
Will it fit in 11" space from bolts to wall?
As with someone else who asked, I also have an 11" distance to wall. Though I do understand that a 10" rough-out toilet might be better, the question is: will this 12" toilet actually fit?. Existing 1994 "Eljer" toilet seems to be standard 12" but fits fine with lid almost touching wall..

Probably not. But check specs for a specific model on a manufacturer's website. They usually have all the demensions.

For the most part, any toilet that is a low-flush or dual-flush toilet rated at 6 litres per flush or less, meets the Los Angeles Supplementary Purchase Specification (SPS), and has a flush performance of 350 grams or more should be accepted.

You can use a list available on the Veritec Consulting Inc. website (www.veritec.ca) as a guide for ecoENERGY eligible products.

It would be recommended to speak with or visit the website of the Ministry of Natural Resources or your Province for any specific questions you may have.

Question
What is the rough in for this toilet?
And generally speaking why doesn't HD show rough ins for any of the toilets on the website? I'd say this is one essential piece of info when it comes to toilets.

Unfortunately, the Mainstream Complete toilet is not available in bone, but you can special order a very similar model (that is available in bone) at your local Home Depot. The toilet is called the "Evolution 2" (3063.016 Elongated Bowl, 4061.500 Lined Tank). Hope this helps.
