The reverse switch is on the top of the fan motor. Please see the attached picture from the manual to see where the switch is located. Hope this helps.

Can this fan be installed flushmount, ie. without using that vertical hanging rod?

Yes it can. But good luck trying to mount the receiver (the yellow device that may fail shortly (within months) after you start using the lighting feature) into the mounting bracket... I couldn't find a mounting bracket that received the receiver when I flush mounted. Barely fit with the wires and marrettes. Good luck.
