Thank you for your question. However, this type of installation is not recommended since railing systems have to comply with building codes. In order to comply, this railing system has to be installed with the corresponding posts, sold separately.

Yes, this product can be cut to the desired length and have a pole ( post ) between the sections.

Since the rail is reinforced with steel, we recommend removing the steel insert from the rail, then cutting the rail and steel insert separately. To cut the vinyl rail, use either a handsaw or a miter saw. Typically a miter saw with a blade that has 80+ teeth will provide a better finish cut, than standard 40 teeth blade for the vinyl. If you chip a little bit of the edge of the cut rail, do not worry as the this railing system uses a rail bracket that wraps around the rails so the cut edge will not be visible.

For the steel insert, use a standard steel hacksaw. When cutting steel, the edges looses a little bit of their rust property, we recommend applying some rust paint ( rust-o-leum as an example ) on the edge that was cut.

Enjoy your installation, measure twice - cut once !

Question
About what size are the pickets?
I'm interested in these but if anyone can help, about what size (diameter) are the individual pickets? I'd like some that are quite substantial in size

The picket size is 7/8'' x 1.5'' each, very similar to what can be found with standard pressure treated lumber. If you are looking for large pickets, we recommend you taking a look at the Premium Classic or Colonial railings, available on Special Order at the Pro-desk.

Question
Connecting without the Universal Post
Can you connect these together at the ends rather than using a Universal Post? For example, if I have a 9 foot span and don't want to post at the 4.5 foot mark, could I attach two kits together?

The attached image is the look I'm going for - clean, without too many posts.

Thanks!

No, you have to use posts to connect them and railing sections are only available in lenghts of 6ft.

We recommend you take a look at the Premium Classic or Colonial Railings system, - they have 6, 8 and 10 ft lenghts available, which are available at the Pro-Desk on special order from the vendor Plastival Inc.
