Firstly we have to determine that it does have a battery backup. To do this, either remove the unit from the ceiling, and disconnect the plug...or, turn off the power supply. Once disconnected, if the detector continues to test after a few minutes of no power, then look on the back for an indintation where a coin or flat screwdriver could twist off a cover. If you loosen the cover, remember to replace the battery in exactly the same way the old one is removed i.e. look for a 'flag' and make sure that it is pushed in first before the battery is installed. If you find that there is no sound once you remove the power supply, then I would say that there is no backup provided on your unit. You should be aware that many newer units expire after approx 7-10 years, and they will sound to warn you if they are about to expire. In this case you must replace the enire unit. It is always wise if you are replacing a battery to vacuum the detector to remove any unwanted dust or cobwebs. If you still have problems, contact the manufactuer for specific details on your unit

You will need to remove the alarm from it's bracket by twisting it off the base. If it is a hardwired alarm then you will have to squeeze the wiring harness near the alarm to release the alarm from the wiring in the ceiling as well. Then you will be able to access the battery compartment and to change the battery. To replace the alarm after you have changed the battery, reconnect the wiring harness by clipping it back into the alarm and twist unit back into the mounting plate.
