PetSafe In-ground Radio Fence Pet Containment System

Proper containment is essential. Responsible pet ownership starts with keeping your pet safely at home. PetSafe's In-Ground Radio Fence Pet Containment Systems provide your pet with freedom and safety while costing thousands less than conventional fencing. It's quick and easy to install, reliable and safe, and with proper training, a very effective solution. How Radio Fence works: A transmitter plugs into a standard outlet and emits a radio signal that travels along an underground wire. A lightweight receiver is worn on your pet's collar which picks up the radio signal and alerts your pet as he nears the underground boundary. The method of correction your pet receives depends on the system that is purchased, varying from a warning tone to a mild static correction. Once your pet is properly trained he will learn to stay in the boundaries designated by your Radio Fence.

You can just lay the wire on top of the ground, however it can easily be damaged or moved. It is best to bury the wire 1-2" below the ground.

Please visit http://wwww.petsafe.net/demos/stand... to see an installation video for this product. The wire if you do not have a fence around your yard will be buried 1"-3" and if you do have a fence then you can weave it through that. I hope this helps.

I have had this system for about 4 years, and YES it does work in heavy snow. The fence wire transmits a signal in every direction, including up. So if you have your transmitter set for about a 6 foot wide "beep zone" it will also transmit 6 feet upwards. Hope that helps.

Mine worked no problem under the snow. But I have a heavy dog who sinks into the snow. If you have a small dog and a drift overtop the wire, they may be able to walk over it.

Hi KerryH
Unfortunately you cannot use this for cats. PetSafe does make one specifically for cats, but Home Depot does not sell it. To see this unit please visit http://www.petsafe.net/catalog/cart.... I hope this helps.

I believe the collar is listed as water resistant. A call to Petsafe may be your best option to see if it is able to be submerged.

How much would additional collars be?

I imagine it would so long as your cats can't climb more than 2 - 3 ft above the wire that's burried in the ground. If there are any trees or high objects close to the wire, your cat may just end up climbing up and jumping over the wire.

Question
Is this one of those 'shock collars' that gives the pet an electrical shock as a signal?
Has anyone who bought this product actually tried it out on themselves to see if it actually shocks the dog? Because if it gives an electrical shock, then I am not interested as I think it is cruelty.
