Questions & Answers for InSinkErator Badger 444 Food Waste Disposer

Question
Why is there an odour coming from the waste disposer?
I've just moved into a home with an InSinkErator 444. I haven't been using the disposer for food waste, but there is a strong odour coming from the drain on both sides of the sink. How do I eliminate the odour?

Hello, please try running ice and citrus fruit peels (orange, lemon or lime) through the disposer. If this does not take care of the smell please contact our customer service department at 1-800-561-1700.
Thank you.

Try grinding up any sort of citrus peel - orange / lime / lemon / grapefruit. It will get rid of the smell. Do this periodically and it won't smell.

Question
Does the water have to be running when disposer is working?
With the plug in the top of the waste disposal if the water is running the sink fills up with water. Will the disposer work with the water not running?

Yes, a strong flow of cold water is required when operating a disposer. Here are the basic operating instructions.

Continuous Feed Disposer Operating Instructions:
1. Remove stopper from sink opening and run strong
flow of cold water.
2. Turn on wall switch to start disposer.
3. Slowly insert food waste into disposer and position
stopper to minimize possible ejection of material
while grinding.
4. After grinding is complete, turn disposer off and run
water for a few seconds to flush drain line.
