A minimum of three coats is recommended when applying this product. The more coats you apply, the more magnetic your suraface will become. One can of brush-on Specialty Chalkboard Paint will cover approximately 95-120 square feet.

Magnetic Primer can be applied OVER whiteboard paint, but should not be applied UNDER whiteboard paint. Whiteboard paint is very thick, and may significantly dull the magnetic power of the primer.

For what it's worth, the directions say it dries in 30 mins, after which you can apply another coat or your paint.

The Magnetic Primer is a waterbased product, and dries very quickly. Wait 4-6 hours before topcoating with the chalkboard paint. If you've applied several coats of magnetic primer (4, or more) wait 24hrs. before topcoating with chalkboard paint.

The magnetic primer contains small metal chips and, as such, has the capacity to conduct electricity. It should not be used over power sources like electrical sockets.

answer 2
Most paints will have difficulty adhering to very smooth surfaces like glass. The Magnetic primer should not be applied directly over glass, but may be applied over a suitable waterbased primer that has the capacity to adhere to glass.

Question
Can the Rustoleum magnetic paint be used on metal window frames?
We want to put screening over the windows using high-end magnets. The window can't have proper screens because of the design, but the frame of the window is non-magnetic, so thought if we painted the frame with magnetic paint it would work.

While the magnetic primer will create a fine magnetised surface for an office, or playroom, it will not effectively support the weight of screens.

Question
can you put a tinted primer over the magnetic primer and still have a magnetic surface

Yes, you can apply a topcoat to the magnetic primer. It will lessen the magnetic properties fractionally. If you want to test how magnetic the primer will be once topcoated, put a piece of paper in front of the magnetically primed surface, and place a magnet on it. That's how magnetic your surface will be after it's been painted. The paper represents approximately two thin coats of paint.

Question
Can I use it on a cork board and cover it with fabric to make a memory board? Will the magnets hold?

answer 1
Cork board is not the best surface on which to apply the Magnetic Primer. It can be very absorbant, and may drink in a lot more primer than drywall, masonry, metal, or wood. What makes our primer magnetic is bits of steel blended in with the paint. The more coats you apply, the more magnetic your surface will become. Covering the primer with fabric, however, will reduce some of the magnetic power of the primer. To create your memory board, it may be more practical to cover a small sheet of metal with fabric. Magnets will likely hold better to this sort of surface.

Question

Yes, you can apply Magnetic Primer over our Chalkboard paint. First, clean the surface well, then scuff it with 220 grit sandpaper. Clean the surface again, to ensure there is no sanding dust residue, and allow the surface to dry completely before topcoating with the magnetic primer. Use as many coats as you need to acheive the desired magnetic effect. You can then apply a two thin coats of chalkboard paint to create a magnetic, erasable surface.
