Questions & Answers for Stoneffects Stoneffects - Step 1 - Primer (3.78L)

Question
Can Stone Effects be used on the exterior of a basement wall that has styrofoam insulation on it?
I have a walk out basment on a new house ( 1 yr. old) we can't afford to finishthe exterior wall yet (plan to use stone) and are wondering what is the cheapest way to protect the styrofoam from UV deterioration (is some already since it's been exposed for 2 years)

was thinking of either gluing Tyvek to it or using Stone Effect type paint - would the stone effects work (it would look better than Tyvek)

Question
Can Stoneeffects be used on previously painted concrete?
I would like to use Stoneeffects to refinish my concrete steps and patio. The paint on the concrete is flaking in certain areas and I will remove this with a wire brush. Some of the paint on the concrete is still in good shape and will be hard to remove completely. Will Stoneeffects adhere well to this? Thanks for your input.

Stoneffects can be applied to a previously painted surface, provided the necessary prep work is done. If possible, powerwash the surface to remove as much loose, or flaking paint as you can. Sand remaining paint, so that the Stoneffects primer can ahere well. When the surface is scuffed, cleaned, and dry, you can begin your application.

While Stoneffects works well on exterior concrete, it does not fare so well long term on exterior wood. Wood is susceptible to small movements due to outdoor temperatures. It can swell in the summer, and contract in the winter. Because our Stoneffects coating is non-flexible, these small movements could cause our product to crack. For this reason, we recommend Stoneffects on concrete for exterior applications. Stoneffects can be applied to wood interiors, where temperature can be controlled. Hope this helps.

Stoneffects has three steps. A roll-on primer, a trowel on-coat (we recommend two thin layers), and a clear roll-on protective top coat. You'll find detailed instructions on the product packaging, and a toll-free number is available should you need to discuss your application with a technician (1-800-387-3625)

Question
Can it be used on laminated counter tops?
I have an old countertop that has seen better days. My wife saw on TV putting on a CounterTop to produce a nicer finish. This is an old arbreright (please excuse the spelling) with scratches and some it looks like burns down to the wood. Can this product be placed over this kind of surface and what kind of life could I expect from it.

Yes, Stoneffects can be used to re-finish an old, arborite countertop. The countertop should be scuffed, and well cleaned before starting. The counter can then be primed with the rustoleum step 1 primer, Two thin coats of Stoneffects Step 2 can then be applied with a trowel, The surface should then be sealed with Step 3 and As a final step, coat the finished project with a layer of Countertop epoxy. The refinished countertop will provide a very durable surface that is food safe.

Hope this helps.

Stoneffects will adopt the memory of any concrete surface it is applied to. For this reason, chips, cracks, spalls, and uneven areas should be repaired, or filled prior to applying Stoneffects.

Question
Can this be applied to metal?
I would like to use this on our foundation but also on the step part of the metal steps attached to the wall (painting the railing part a different colour). I am wondering if this would adhere, or if the metal would be too flexible due to heat expansion.

Yes, Stoneffects can be applied to previously painted surfaces. Clean the surfaces well, and scuff them with 150 grit sandpaper to abrade the paint. Clean again to remove any sanding dust, and allow surfaces to dry. You can then begin applying Stoneffects

Note that applying Stoneffects to vertical surfaces can be challenging, since the trowel-on material is heavy. The product would have to be applied in thin coats for it to adhere well, and to avoid sagging.
